Ed Angara: Seer of Sea & Sierra

By Nick Joaquin

This biographical profile of Senator Edgardo J. Angara was one of the last manuscripts that Nick Joqauin completed before his death on April 29, 2004, a few days before his 87th birthday.

The author, Nick Joaquin, regarded as the greatest Filipino writers of the 20th century and the Grand Old Man of Philippine literature, lived a long, illustrious life as a novelist, playwright, poet, journalist, historian, and biographer.

He was the recipient of almost all of the important prestigious awards in literature and the arts, including the 1976 National Artist Award for Literature, “the highest national recognition given to Filipino artists who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts and to the cultural heritage of the country.”

He was also conferred, among other recognitions, the Republic Cultural Heritage Award for Literature in 1961, the Journalist of the Year Award in the early 1960’s, the Catholic Mass Media Book of the Year Award in 1979 for his Almanac for Manilenos, the National Book Award for at least five of his works and the Tanglaw ng Lahi Award in 1997.

As the 1996 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts (regarded as the Asian counterpart of the Nobel Prize), he was recognized for “exploring the mysteries of the Filipino body and soul in sixty inspired years as a writer.”
