Re-Viewing Filipino Cinema

By Bienvenido Lumbera

Putting together what I had written about film in the last three decades that I have been following the output of the local industry is in effect “re-viewing” Filipino cinema…The articles in this book are in two languages.

I was addressing myself to two separate audiences – English for the young intelligentsia that I wanted to lure into watching local movies, and Tagalog for the popular audience who saw mainly Tagalog movies, and industry people in positions that could introduce change and new direction for local filmmaking.

Re-Viewing Filipino Cinema comes at a time when Tagalog movies in the 35mm format seem to have arrived in their twilight years. Independent movies in the form of digital films that the Cinemalaya Film Festival of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, have proliferated since 2005, have ushered in a new chapter in the history of Filipino movies.

Poet, literary critic, and librettist, Bienvenido Lumbera is a National Artist of the Philippines for literature. He is a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communications, and has won the National Book Award and Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Literature.
